What is 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel 304, also identified as 1.4301, is one of the most versatile and widely used stainless steels. Historically, it has been referred to as 18/8, a name reflecting its nominal composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

This stainless steel grade belongs to the austenitic family and is well-suited for deep drawing processes. Due to this characteristic, Grade 304 is the preferred choice for manufacturing items such as sinks and saucepans.

The low-carbon variant, Grade 304L, is designed for improved weldability, making it ideal for heavy-gauge components. Additionally, certain products like plates and pipes are often available in “dual-certified” forms, meeting the requirements for both 304 and 304L.
