What is 316H Stainless Steel

316H stainless steel is the high-carbon version of 316 stainless steel, designed for superior performance in high-temperature environments. It is also referred to as the UNS S31609 stainless steel.

Alloy 316H stainless steel is a high-carbon version of 316, specifically designed for structural and pressure vessel applications operating at temperatures above 932°F (500°C). The higher carbon content enhances tensile strength, yield strength, and creep resistance, while the stable austenitic structure ensures excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.

In terms of corrosion resistance, Alloy 316H performs comparably to 316 and demonstrates superior resistance compared to 304, particularly in moderately corrosive environments. It is commonly used in process streams containing chlorides or halides, as well as in polluted marine atmospheres and environments that are oxidizing or reducing in nature.

Alloy 316H is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. However, it can be strengthened through cold working. The material also offers excellent weldability and workability, making it suitable for standard shop fabrication practices.

More Information About 316H Stainless Steel Sheet Plate

When you choose to buy 316H Stainless Steel Sheet Plate, there have some important points we need to know before we get started.

So enjoy the read…

Features of 316H Stainless Steel Sheet Plate

CNC Machining
Due to its robust strength and high work-hardening rate, 316H requires a sophisticated machining strategy. At SEATHER, we mitigate these challenges by utilizing:

Specialized Tooling: Sharp carbide cutters with heat-resistant coatings.

Optimized Parameters: Strict control over feed rates and constant cutting speeds to prevent localized hardening.

Advanced Techniques: For intricate geometries, we employ multi-pass strategies and precise tool engagement to avoid thermal buildup.

Quality Control: Real-time monitoring of vibration and thermal fluctuations ensures a 0.01 mm tolerance and superior surface integrity.

Cold Working
The high ductility of 316H makes it an excellent candidate for cold-forming processes. While yield strength and hardness increase through deformation, we carefully manage strain levels during bending, rolling, and drawing to prevent embrittlement or cracking. This allows for significant strengthening while maintaining essential material elongation.

Hot Working
For heavy shaping like forging and extrusion, 316H is processed at temperatures exceeding 1150°C. At these levels, the alloy’s ductility is maximized and work hardening is minimized. We maintain rigorous thermal regulation to prevent surface oxidation and ensure the mechanical properties remain uniform throughout the component.

Heat Treatment & Annealing
To restore the material’s peak performance after forming or welding, we utilize standard solution annealing between 1010°C and 1120°C.

Stress Relief: Reduces hardness from 70–90 HRB to a more workable 60–70 HRB.

Ductility: Boosts elongation to a minimum of 40%.

Precision Control: We strictly avoid overheating to prevent carbide precipitation, which can compromise the alloy’s signature corrosion resistance.

Weldability
316H offers exceptional weldability via TIG, MIG, and resistance welding. While preheating is generally unnecessary, we utilize specialized filler metals to counteract the higher carbon content of the “H” grade. This ensures the weld zone remains resistant to intergranular corrosion and maintains structural toughness.

Formability
The austenitic structure of 316H provides a perfect balance of yield strength and elongation. This allows for complex stretching and shaping. Our production floor uses specialized tooling designed to eliminate surface micro-scratches, which are potential catalysts for localized corrosion.

Surface Finishing
Whether for sanitary requirements or aesthetic excellence, 316H responds beautifully to:

Mechanical Polishing & Grinding: Achieving high-luster finishes with minimal tool degradation.

Electropolishing: Enhancing the passive chromium-oxide layer for maximum chemical resistance. The resulting smooth finish is vital for preventing contaminant buildup in critical applications.
