About 316H Austenitic Stainless Steel
What is 316H Austenitic Stainless Steel?
316H stainless steel is the high-carbon version of 316 stainless steel, designed for superior performance in high-temperature environments. It is also referred to as the UNS S31609 / W.Nr. 1.4919 stainless steel.
Alloy 316H stainless steel is a high-carbon version of 316, specifically designed for structural and pressure vessel applications operating at temperatures above 932°F (500°C). The higher carbon content enhances tensile strength, yield strength, and creep resistance, while the stable austenitic structure ensures excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.
In terms of corrosion resistance, Alloy 316H performs comparably to 316 and demonstrates superior resistance compared to 304, particularly in moderately corrosive environments. It is commonly used in process streams containing chlorides or halides, as well as in polluted marine atmospheres and environments that are oxidizing or reducing in nature.
Alloy 316H is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. However, it can be strengthened through cold working. The material also offers excellent weldability and workability, making it suitable for standard shop fabrication practices.
